HUMAN TRAFFICKING
Human Trafficking in the United States and across the globe is real. Today, this day, human beings are still being enslaved. In fact, the industry is growing exponentially—a $150 billion industry worldwide. Currently, it is the third largest international crime industry. The International Labour Organization estimates that there are 20.9 million victims of human trafficking globally (labor and sex trafficking). In the US, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children estimated in 2016 that 1 in 6 endangered runaways reported to them were likely sex trafficking victims.
We are all connected, and we cannot afford to close our eyes to what is occurring. It affects each of us whether we realize it or not.
I’ve had an active interest in seeing an end to global human trafficking for 20 years and awhile back learned its right here, in the US, in Michigan—in my own backyard. It is unconscionable that human beings are still for sale in 2019. People are not property.
A part of my service involves this vulnerable population. As such, I work privately and in groups with survivors, have created a cloud-based program for human trafficking recovery, am a member of the Michigan Human Trafficking Task Force and the Steering Committee of the 29th Judicial Circuit Court (MI) Journey Court, and am honored to be a part of this groundbreaking, multi-award winning documentary, Break the Chain. People deserve to be free.
